What is tonkatsu sauce?
Tonkatsu sauce is a thick brown sauce that is often eaten with katsu. It can also be used as a condiment for a variety of other dishes such as yakisoba and okonomiyaki. It is made from a mixture of vegetables, vinegar and sugar. Japanese people often refer to it as o-sōsu. There are also thinner varieties that are similar to Worcestershire sauce.
Where can I find tonkatsu sauce?
Asian food stores stock it. The most popular brand is Bull-dog sauce and it’s absolutely yum. If you can’t get hold of it though. Mix 2 tablespoons of ketchup and 2 tablespoons of Worcestershire sauce – that should do the trick!
What else can I use it for?
You can squirt it in yakisoba or over okonomiyaki, katsu, ebi-fry (fried breadcrumbed prawns). It’s also great mixed up with ketchup and mayo!
